Style Mark, the US group that acquired Polaroid Eyewear in 2007, has the exclusive distribution in the USA for Hello Kitty eyewear for children over 10. It has now decided to extend the distribution to the rest of the world, Europe included, for sunglass models only, and recently negotiated this extension with Sanrio, the owner of the Hello Kitty brand, on a non-exclusive basis. But this extended license creates a conflict with the European firms that also have non-exclusive distribution of the brand ? Opal, a French firm that distributes Hello Kitty eyewear in Europe excluding Italy, and Inottica, an Italian company that covers Italy and four other countries including Turkey and Morocco. The next issue of Eyewear Intelligence will look at the situation in more detail.
