The Belluno eyewear district came at the top of Italy's fashion and accessories sector during the seven economically difficult years from 2008 to 2015. It also came in second place among the country's industrial clusters for its economic performance. Number one is Prosecco di Valdobbiadene, the sparkling wine from the province of Treviso, with a rating of 92.8 percent and an average growth rate of 8.3 percent per year. The Belluno district had an overall rating of 84.3 percent, with an average annual growth rate of 3.28 percent. The trend continued in 2016 for the Belluno eyewear cluster, with sales up by 3.7 percent and exports up by 3.6 percent, led by the sunglass sector. The ranking for the 2008-15 period is reported in the ninth annual report on Italy's industrial clusters released by Banca Intesa San Paolo, which takes into account a number of parameters including the place of production - reshoring is an important element here, i.e. the fact that a company brings production back to its country of origin after a period of delocalization - brands and patents, exports, and the presence of major groups. Almost all of these criteria are relevant for the entire Belluno eyewear industry, the smaller players included. The 485 firms that cover the entire production process from manufacturers of screws for frames to the major eyewear brands include the six major international players, including Luxottica, Safilo and De Rigo. Around 87.8 percent of the industry's annual turnover of over €2 billion is exported worldwide.
