The eyewear market in the Middle East is now valued at more than $2 billion, according to the Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC), which organizes the Vision-X Dubai 2006 eyewear exhibition, formerly known as Optical Middle East. The relatively high consumption rate is due to extremely warm climatic conditions, which call for big use of sunglasses, and to the high purchasing power of the population. However, the training level of opticians is not up to world standards. DWTC says its show will be 40 percent larger than before. The show will take place on Feb. 12-14, and it will feature a conference held by the Emirates Medical Association Ophthalmic Society (EMAOS).
