The Spanish authorities have dismantled one of the main hubs in the European Union for the distribution of counterfeit goods. The international gang operated in and around La Jonquera, in northeastern Spain, close to the French border. The Spanish police, which was assisted in the operation by Europol, said in a statement it has arrested 71 people and seized nearly 270,000 fake watches, jewelry and other goods. Many of the products were imported from abroad, especially China, Turkey and Portugal, but some products, mainly leather goods and belts, were counterfeited directly in Spain. The majority of those detained were of Israeli or Moroccan nationality. The operation was staged on Nov. 29, when arrests were made and the police inspected around 40 premises. The products seized were worth more than €8 million at market prices. The operation was defined as the biggest ever conducted in Spain against violations of intellectual property (IP).
