The Swiss government has announced the elimination of various public health care benefits including the reimbursement of expenses for ophthalmic lenses and contact lenses, starting with the beginning of 2011. The Swiss health care system has been funding until now the purchase of a pair of spectacles for a maximum of €180 every year for children and every five years for adults. The Swiss public is complaining, considering also that the basic health insurance fee increased last year by 8.7 percent.
