The US government has abolished a series of retaliatory customs measures, imposed in 1999 in the context of the so-called banana war against the European Union, which involved among other things a 100 percent duty on empty eyeglass cases imported from the EU. These cases are now subject again to import duties varying between 5 and 20 percent, depending on their characteristics, but Fedon, the largest supplier, has asked the EU to reimburse the difference that its US importers had to pay during the retaliation period. Cases imported with the eyewear frames inside were and are still duty-free in the USA.
