The Vision Council of the U.S. has obtained an exemption for eyeglasses from a new 2.3 percent tax that will be collected on sales of medical devices to U.S. retailers from 2014. The tax had been voted on by the U.S. Congress as part of a new comprehensive health care bill, but following the Vision Council's lobbying efforts, the final version of the legislation signed by President Barack Obama added a clause that creates an exemption for eyeglasses. The Vision Council says it will continue to work with the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services to ensure that this exemption is respected at the time of implementation of the new law.
