Thema Optical, an Italian company founded in 1971, is launching a proprietary Virtual Eyewear Assistant (VEA) at the Silmo show in Paris, after six months of testing with individuals and at selected Italian optical retail stores. The internally designed software and hardware allow customers to choose the glasses in its seven different collections that are most suited for their face. The customers can also personalize the frames by choosing from a range of more than 1,000 shades, adding their own name if they wish. The company's biggest single client, the Greeenvision chain, will have exclusive rights to the application in Italy, at least for a while. With a turnover of between €10 million and €20 million, Thema sells its products through more than 5,000 shops in Europe, working directly with them in France, Spain and Portugal and through distributors in other countries. The company is managed since four years ago by Roberto Valmasso, son of its founder. His sister Giulia runs a U.S. sales subsidiary established three years ago.
