U.S. President Donald Trump announced via Twitter that his administration will introduce an extra 10 percent duty on $300 billion worth of Chinese imports, including eyewear. The Vision Council stated that the tariffs will also affect Chinese-made spectacle lenses, spectacle frames, sunglasses, reading glasses, eyeglasses, safety glasses, goggles and many low-vision devices unless they are excluded from the final list of imports subject to the tariff hike. Safilo said that it has contingency plans to tackle the issue and can react within a month to any increase in tariffs.
