VSP Global has reached the milestone of 1 million adults and children having received free eye exams and glasses through its Eyes of Hope initiative, which is aimed to improve access to eyewear and eyecare to people in need. Eyes of Hope offers gift certificates for no-cost eyecare in a VSP doctor's office, or to support access to quality vision care for school-aged children, among other actions. Following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005, for example, VSP developed mobile eyecare clinics for community members, while supporting vision care providers who had lost their practices. After achieving the 1 million people milestone, VSP Global has now committed to helping another million through the “Eyes of Hope: a Million More” program, which is supposed to provide access to eyecare to 1 million more people by 2020. The new initiative launches in May with a 2016 partnership with the U.S. Conference of Mayors, which will enable access to no-cost eyecare and eyewear in 10 U.S. cities.
