Women are overtaking the optometrist profession in the UK and improving it, according to statistics from the General Optical Council's yearly registration review. The review shows that in 2005 there were 5,163 male and 5,256 female optometrists, as compared to 2001 when there were 4,818 male and 4,170 female optometrists. At the same time, the number of complaints against opticians has fallen from 184 in 2004/05 to 146 in 2005/06. In 1960, women accounted for less than 5 percent of registered practitioners in the UK.
